Home Remedies to Keep Away Mice and Get Rid of the Them

Mice are one of the easily one of the most annoying pets to get rid of- however, they are also one of the ones that can gain access to your home the easiest. If you have a group of mice that have wiggled their way into your home, but you aren’t sure if you really want to deal with poison or traps, don’t worry: there are multiple home remedies that you can use to get rid of mice and keep them away. Especially when living in a home that has pets or children, both of whom can get into poison and traps easily and hurt themselves, sometimes home remedies are the best way to go.

One of the best ways to get rid of mice, using something that you might have in your pantry right now, is by using instant mashed potatoes. To use this method, simple sprinkle a few tablespoons of the flakes where mice frequent- usually given away by droppings or urine stains. The mice will ingest the potatoes, allowing the flakes to expand in their stomachs, killing them before they are digested fully.

Another method, which will drive the mice away from your home instead of killing them, is by using either one of their natural predators, or used kitty litter. Cats are one of the biggest natural predators of mice, and will often run after them and catch them when your cat sees a mouse running around. Alternatively, you can use used kitty litter, sprinkling it all around entry points that mice like to use; the scent will make the mice think that there is a cat nearby, causing them to run away as fast as they can.

Alternatively, there are a few things that you can plug up holes with that will trap the mice, and make sure that they don’t come back. First, you should find all the holes that mice are using the gain entry to your house, and mark them with a piece of chalk. Next, buy either some copper scouring pads, green kitchen pads, or steel wool to plug them up: the scouring and green pads will be too thick for the mice to gnaw through, keeping them trapped; the steel wool, though, irritates their teeth, as well as being too thick to chew through.

There are many great natural alternatives now to the traditional ‘poison or trap’ ways of getting rid of mice. With only a few things that might be laying around your home right now, you can both drive out the mice that are bothering you, and keep them away, without having to spend money on an exterminator or wildlife removal specialist.
